MODEL OF STRATUM FORMING |
|
PURPOSE |
This model is effective for teaching about forming stratums. |
This model does not need big experiment tools (as a long water tube). |
|
TARGET |
Elementary school students (6th Grade) |
|
CATEGORY |
Earth sciences Geology |
|
MATERIALS |
Plastic test tube (diameter: 16mm length: 100mm) …1 Cap (for diameter: 15~17mm) …1 Glass beads diameter: 0.09~0.18mm Glass beads diameter: 0.25~0.50mm Glass beads diameter: 0.71~1.19mm 4% polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution …10mL Oiliness acrylic color spray …3 colors |
|
HOW TO MAKE |
- By each size glass beads are colored by acryl color spray. |
- Mix three kinds of colored glass beads. |
- Put beads in and pile up until 1cm from the bottom end of the tube as shown in Fig.2. |
- Inject a 4% PVA (polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution) to the tube. |
- Make a small hole for ventilation to the cap. (The hole will be closed by PVA) |
- Close the cap calmly as shown in Fig.3. |
- Stir well to mix a liquid and beads as shown in Fig.4. |
|
HOW TO USE |
- Shake the tube in order glass beads to be mixed uniformly. |
- Put it for about a minute in a vertical state. |
- Glass beads make stratums. (cf.Fig.5) |
|
DEVELOPMENT |
- Not only beads, but you can use sands or alumina balls instead. |
- If a tube is being left for a long time, particles in the tube are not mix easily. This is demonstrating the process of changing sand into rock. (cf.Fig.6) |
- You can make more stratums by using silicon tube. (cf.Fig.7,8) |
